Fire Tower, January 26th, 2017

commentary and photos by Emily
"Yup, just another day in the  hiking heaven of beautiful Elliot Lake.  Seven club members decided to  shelve  their snowshoes for some hiking boots.  We  parked at the Milliken Mine berm and walked on Milliken Mine Rd to the Fire Tower Lookout Rd.   The road was clear down to the pavement all the way to the top.  The view was worth the one kilometre trek from the gate to the top  of the hill.

Our group enjoyed the view but not enough to linger too long in the wind gusts. One hiker even braved the  north winds to take a video of  Lake Huron. There   were  bands of snow squalls moving across  over the big lake!  We headed back down and had  time for  a leisurely snack sheltered by the trees  in the Sheriff Creek  along   the yellow trail.

Our hikes always have useful  information.  We discuss politics, books we have read, movies we have seen. We share household  repair tips and recipes. Today had an extra bit of knowledge for us.

Two of the hikers had some very useful foot gear to share.  They had some ice grippers that fit under the sole of  your boots to  improve your footing on slippery ground.  One of our group tried them and found they did help.  The things one learns on a Coureurs de bois hike.! PHOTOS
