Our Hikes….we offer
Leisure Hikes
Monday morning at 10am is a leisure hike. These are normally one and a half to two hours in length and are based on going at a leisurely pace. The leisure hike includes time for a snack, stops along the way for pictures, viewing, a stretch and a drink, or even chit chat. Leisure hikes do not involve a specific destination or distance. Proper hiking shoes/boots are required. These hikes are the perfect choice for beginning hikers to try.
Easy Hikes
Our easy hikes take place on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10am. They range from 2 1/2 to 4 hours and from 5 to 8 kms and include time for a snack/drink. There are more hills on these hikes than on leisure hikes, and the terrain may be more rugged underfoot. Proper hiking shoes/boots are required.
Intermediate Hikes
Intermediate hikes are held on Thursdays at 10am and are a step above Easy hikes in that the terrain is usually more rugged, and changes in elevation more pronounced. Hikes could be 3 to 5 hr's and range from 6 to 10+ km's. Proper hiking shoes/boots are required. You definitely want water and a snack. These hikes are not recommended for people who do not have prior hiking experience and who are not in good physical condition.
Once there is sufficient snow on the ground our hikes change to snowshoe hikes. Check the club calendar for updates to the schedule; http://coureursdeboiselliotlake.blogspot.ca/ and click on the "Club Calendar" tab.
Seniors Hikes
On Thursday afternoons there is an additional hike which will be on flat terrain and about 1 1/2 hours. The pace will be conducive to observation and conversation. These hikes ( only ) meet at the Scotia Bank parking lot at 1 PM. This hike is perfect for beginning senior hikers. Proper hiking shoes/boots are recommended but proper fitting running shoes are permitted.
We allow a non member a maximum of three "free" hikes. Membership costs $40.00 per year. Please contact Sue Limoges 705 227- 0498 to join. ALL HIKES, UNLESS OTHERWISE ADVISED, LEAVE THE LOT BEHIND SCOTIA-BANK AT 10 AM SHARP!
What do I need to get started?
Our club requires all hikers to have appropriate well fitting footwear ( no open toed shoes or Croc style footwear ) as we hike on some unsteady terrain such as rocks/logs/mud/water/sloped rock/ and rutted trails etc. Clothing should be appropriate to the season and weather, water and a snack energy bars/nuts/fruit are highly recommended. During bug season, most of our members carry bug spray and/or bug clothing. A sun hat is recommended. Lots of us also carry a bear bell, a hiking stick(s), a knife, a first aid kit, a whistle, sunscreen and a flashlight, due to the rugged areas we hike it never hurts to be properly prepared.
If you have any questions about a specific hike, check the Club Calendar for the hike leader and give them a call. It is highly recommended that before your first hike that you contact the club at elhiking@gmail.com to make sure the hike you want to come out on is still going to be going on as scheduled, sometimes weather conditions or other circumstances could cause a hike to be cancelled.
Our hike leaders have the right to refuse to take someone who is unprepared for the planned hike or if the hike is unsuitable for that person.
