Spine Beach Ski Trail, April 20, 2017

Commentary and photos by Emily
Ninety per cent chance of rain? Check . Chance of sleet?  Check.   Strong gusts of wind from the east?  Check.

That weather forecast  just encouraged the 5  die hard hikers who showed up for the April 20 Intermediate Hike. We parked at Spruce Avenue Beach and hiked towards the 3 km mark and the trail down to Sandy Point.   We stopped for a brief  snack on that beach.   It was only 11:30 when we left there. So, we had time to go to the bridge over the creek at the  4 km mark.  The only place on this hike  where we noticed garbage was at Sandy Point beach. The campfire pit has been built up with concrete sides for the use of campers who want to build  a fire while enjoying nature. Now it is partially filled with non burnable plastic bags and disposable diapers.  Coffee cups and beer cans are strewn around by  people who are strong enough to carry out a full case of beer or cup of coffee but not ambitious enough to carry it out !!

The trail was muddy in some spots as we expected. There even was enough patchy snow to make us not grumble about those muddy spots.  The creek at the bridge  was not running high as we had expected.  We suspected that there was a dam further upstream stopping the flow. The sun even started to come out as we checked out the warming hut.  The sleeping bag is still there!  PHOTOS
