A chance meeting at the Civic Centre Visitors Bureau a few weeks ago between Gerry and the manager there resulted in the City of Elliot Lake becoming interested in putting together a new improved map book for visiting hikers. The last time we had a book of the local trails was some time ago and this was probably done before the popularity and accuracy of portable GPS units as we know them now.
A meeting with City officials was convened and the decision to go ahead with the initial mapping was made. The Coureurs de Bois Outdoors Club would be responsible for this task and we would work with a group of young people from the Katimavic organisation to accomplish the task. They would be responsible, in teams lead by one of our members, for mapping, trail descriptions and photography.
In two weeks we had successfully mapped all the "City" trails, those easily accessible from the Civic Centre, from Beaver Mountain in the north to Westner Lake in the south.
All the mapping information was downloaded daily and at the end of the project, the trail descriptions and photographs were all handed to the City for processing. They will be responsible for correlating this information and eventually handing it to a professional company for printing.
It was a pleasure working with the Katimavic group. These young people came from across Canada and ranged in age from 17 to 21. They were interested in the project and worked enthusiastically with us. At the end of the project they put on a lunch for our club volunteers and we, in turn, presented them each with a quality "hoodie" on which were stitched the City and Coureurs de Bois logos, plus their name on the sleeve. His Honour, Mayor Rick Hamilton also attended and presented each member with a certificate from the City expressing the gratitude of the community
Thanks to all the volunteers and particularly Nickie & Gerry who headed up our part of the project. We look forward to the end result.
