Despite fog, gloomy skies, and a forecast that threatened rain, six hikers joined this opportunity to work off a little bit of Christmas dinner. A modest goal was set and we made our way through the former Milliken mine site to the Wintergreen Trail (to Hidden Lake?). The approach had plenty of mushy mud and water frozen in tire ruts but as we hit the side trail, a cushion of wet leaves welcomed us to the eerie solitude of the forest. Despite some ice in previous hikers' footsteps in places and some pretty rocky terrain, we made surprisingly quick work of the trail. The lake was before us way before we expected it! Our snacks and great chatter engaged us all but the burning question remains - what created those frozen-over, spider-legged holes in the ice of the Bay? Beavers? Freeze and thaw cycles in a shallow bay? Aliens? ... if anyone has the correct answer we would love to know! Please see the attached pictures.
