THURSDAY MORNING HIKE 2024 03 14

The weather and conditions were perfect for hiking a snowmachine trail that would make it a truly 'Thursday' hike. The leader proposed  a section just north of the Quirke tailings site, and, after one hiker made a quick footwear change, we were off!   As we started out, it was quickly noted that surfaces hadn't thawed quite yet but we persevered and were rewarded with some welcome (?) challenges (read: some ice,  a water obstacle - which Dave A. promptly tamed, and steep hills - both up and down!).  The softer snow on the side of the trail made all things possible when the going got tough, even without poles.  Hiking on trails in the woods does not have to be put on hold yet, by any means! After conquering our 4th... or 5th? ... hill, we decided that we had mastered it all and turned back toward home.  A lovely spot overlooking the fish hatchery presented itself for our lunch and a pleasant break was enjoyed by all.  The return was made much easier with the warming temperatures (read: better traction).  The trade off was that now mud  was in evidence on some of the south-facing hills - but only enough to get the bottom of our boots dirty.  It had, indeed, been a great day for this Thursday hike!
