Wolf run 2024 12 23

The light snow and much milder temperatures  proved to be a very pleasant combination for hiking the Wolf Run Trail. The change in temperature softened the previously hard snowpack  and the thin snow covering hid the ice that had formed in the tire ruts making walking more of a challenge than expected for the three of us this morning.  Two of us did slip, landing softly  in the snow, but 'the old man' was the only one who made it out and back on the trail without a tumble.

A very large moose had used the trail some days before the cold snap leaving impressive tracks frozen in the slush.  Two partridges took wing as we approached the falls, and the crack of a rather large sheet of ice startled all of us as Rod made his way back to the trail from viewing the small stream still burbling through the woods. Luckily the water under the ice had drained away and Rod's boots stayed dry.
Although the highway was not in the best condition, the beauty of the snow-dusted trees, and the quiet of the woods made getting out for a hike well worth the effort.
