Re-discovering an old route to Old Baldy. Mark and I scouted out the trail conditions ( mon may 26th ) total distance was 7.5km in and out, trail conditions were better than anticipated but we still did a fair amount of small hand chainsaw cutting. Went as far as the big swamp then bush-wacked northward to the beautiful shore of Flack lake and enjoyed our lunch on two primitive water access sites.
Proper hiking shoes/boots and water/snack is a must. Rainwear and a hiking stick are recommended as well as bug spray and or head net. We will park just outside of Mississagi PP then walk approx 100 yards south to where we will access the trail on the west side of Hwy 639.
The idea for this hike was originally relayed to me from an old-timer who used to work at Mississagi PP and was an overland route that was once used to access Old Baldy. NOTE*** We will not be going to Old Baldy, the scouting hike only took us one third of the way there and the rest of the route conditions are unknown, we will further explore the route ( past the swamp ) in the fall when conditions will be cooler and drier... **** Do not plan to be back before 4pm*** We will go as far as the Flack Lake camping spots, then have lunch and make our way back to the vehicles. Rain-date for this hike will be on Fri June 6th, if that day is rained out then the hike will be postponed for a later date.
