Today was a crisp, brisk, sunny morning for a snowshoe trek.
We gathered our gear at the parking lot and crossed Denison Mine Rd to the trail. Through the red pines we spied a trail someone had made up the steep berm toward Hwy 108. We decided against the ascent. Perhaps, another day??
In the red pine thicket some creative and brawny soul had constructed a 5 ft high bonhomme de neige ( snowman). Facial details were made of a red pine twig for hair and sticks for eyes, nose, and mouth.
Chickadees and blue jays flitted among tree branches near various hand crafted bird feeders.
No otters were seen at the Rapids .
However someone saw three ducks on the wing.
We did a trek down the main trail to see if there was any open water on the Serpent River further east . Not today. Ice still covered the slow moving water. Soon spring will bring break up season.
On our return to the cars we passed our new found snow friend. An imaginative snowshoer won a bag of dark chocolate with his name suggestion for the work of art: Bonhomme
