Nineteen people went over to Manitoulin Island on September 10 to hike the Cup and Saucer Trail. We climbed up to a series of lookouts overlooking a sheer cliff over Manitou Lake, then went down to a series of overhangs and caves, finishing off the day at the Red Dog Grill for dinner.

We all met at the information booth in Espanola – hence the first photo taken of all 19 of us together, by an unsuspecting tourist from Germany (he was with his wife). The tourists were on their way to Sault Ste Marie and I told him that we were all from Elliot Lake and to watch for the signs on the highway.
The trail markers included several decorated tree stumps: one with chewing gum, another with bottle caps; and the concrete block that proved to be the anticlimax of the hike – it marked the highest point on Manitoulin Island. Hikers were assisted by Stephanie who held up a 50 ton ledge of rock so we could safely walk under it; Mark used his useful long arms to point out our location on the periodic trail maps; and Mark successfully found the “cave” but had to forfeit a free dinner because it wasn’t where he claimed it to be (yes he is gesturing in the photo).
