Horne Lake are, 2019-05-30

Commentary by Emily photos by Bill H.:
What a difference in weather in this month of May.
The second day of May  we were in tuques, coats and winter boots. The second last day of May we wore
bug hats, bug spray and hiking boots!
Five inspired souls left our vehicles at the corner of Milliken Mine Rd and Hwy 108. After copious amounts of bug spray were applied we headed east along the ATV trail towards the RV campground and on to the Horne Lake trail to the cliffs.
We saw trout and perch in the first creek we crossed.  The perch fingerlings  were schooling together waiting for the current to help push them over a beaver dam that is under construction in that creek. The trout were just chilling out facing the current waiting for tasty goodies to come at them.
Lots of  happy birds were singing along the trails. Most stayed in the tree canopy out of sight. No ornithologists were with us so, no positive identifications were made.  We did see  a loon and a Caspian tern on Horne Lake. Of that, we are sure!
Leaves are really opening up day by day. Different fern species  are unfurling. Lilies, Trillium, violets, cherry, blueberry and strawberry blossoms are everywhere!
The view from the high cliffs today was as spectacular as always.

It was a great day for a hike. No icicles, just blackflies.
