Liz & Phill Barnes moved to Elliot Lake in 1993 and joined the Coureurs de Bois Outdoors Club in 1995. Liz believed she had already gone to heaven when she moved here. She was a keen outdoors person in all seasons.
Liz was a very active member of the club and hiked as often as possible. She took part in trail clearing and was active in winter sports also. Despite going to Florida for part of the winter, she insisted on spending at least one month playing in the snow and traveled back here in January for that. Needless to say, Liz was a very friendly person and always welcomed new members to the various activities she participated in. She made many friends wherever she lived and particularly here in Elliot Lake.
Liz was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2005, but did not let that hamper her activities until the disease made it impossible for her to continue. She was still hiking up to 2012.
She was admitted as a resident to St. Joseph's Manor in late 2013 and passed away there at Christmas in 2017. While she was in the Manor, I requested that ,when she passed away, a trail be named after her. It was agreed that the Banana Lake trail be that trail. I have placed a bench on other dedicated trails, the Paul Echle and Helen's trails, and have made one for Liz's trail also,
Due to the late arrival of summer and now the heat wave, it has been delayed. We have the signs also.
I know many members had never met Liz and many of her old friends have either moved or also passed on, so I need to know if there are members in the club that would volunteer to help in taking the bench out to the Banana Lake trail. The bench is in 10 pieces and would have to be carried in about 4 km to a prearranged spot where I would put it together.
I would prefer to do this while we have good weather, but during this heat wave is not the time, so
probably later in August.
Please call me 705 8488767 if you can help.
Thanks, Phill
