Twenty one intrepid hikers left Spine Rd Beach at 10 15 and returned at 1 p.m.
Details:
We hiked the Lakeside Trail from Spine Rd Beach for a distance of 3.25 km. Along the way we took note of strangely formed tree roots, widow makers hanging in treetop branches and a few bird species. Chickadees and blue jays followed us at different times. A pileated woodpecker was an added treat to see!
The August windstorm certainly left several huge reminders through the bush. Huge uproooted hemlocks with diameters of almost one metre were scrambled like matchsticks between the lake and the ski trail. Some were lying across the trail and being too big for our chainsaws we wisely re-rooted the Lakeside Trail around them.
At another point we re-rooted the trail around at least one dozen monster maple
trees that were downed at the same place. We decided to stop for lunch at a beach at the 3 km mark of thus trail. Good chats were had .
On the way back we checked out a few oddities we saw in cedar roots and some precariously hanging yellow birch and hemlocks casualties of the windstorm.
We made it back to the cars and were impressed by the beauty of this area but also the awesome power of nature.
