A group of 11 enthusiastic hikers set off to circumnavigate Angel Lake from the Canmet snow dump. To snowshoe or not was the first decision of the hike, with everyone electing to don snowshoes as the snow was still quite deep and soft in places. The trail started innocently enough, winding gently through the forest. But soon we hit a couple of steep sections which required some careful footwork and occasional use of … other body parts. But we all managed to slip and slide our way through with only a few minor tumbles. The only loss was a water bottle that rolled down the hill to the lake, not to be seen again.
We climbed to the top of the infamous Snot Rock, where we stopped for lunch and enjoyed the fine view of Crystal Lake. The air was noticeably thinner up there, and clearly it affected some folks because they started acting very strange!
We descended back to Angel Lake and hiked along the shore, admiring some interesting ice formations along the way. The rest of the hike was a breeze and we made it back to our cars 4 km and 2.5 hours after we started. Everyone was in high spirits and enjoyed being out on such a beautiful day. Thanks to Ginette for sweeping and kudos to everyone for rising up to the challenge!
