We Wandered the Washington Way today!
Actually eleven of us snowshoed the flat trails and steep hills behind the Washington Apts and towards the Bellingham Bush.
People had walked on the trails with boots. Good to have the trail broken but those icy footprints were sometimes hard to follow with our snowshoes so, we often stepped onto the crusty snow.
As the morning wore on the snow became stickier. A forward thinking hike leader offered something unusual to the group at the circle.
Screwdrivers were offered to chip away the ice from our snowshoes!!
Despite the entreaties and encouragement by said hike leader only one hike accepted a screwdriver. It could have been the initial shock people felt when they saw the sharp objects being offered...who knows!??
We saw tracks of fox, possible wolf tracks , squirrel, and evidence of pileated woodpeckers. No beaver activity was visible near the ski trail to Spine Rd.
On the way back we saw a cedar tree spiraled like a large licorice stick. Further on a "golden tree root"
and a huge burl in a yellow birch tree caught our attention.
We lunched near huge erratics in the sun and "undulating" tree shadows . Good stories were shared !
Chickadees buzzed around us as we're neared the parking lot.
It was a five kilometer hike on a beautiful day!!
Thanks to our videographer, Ron and our Sweep , Ginette.
