On one of the coldest days for a hike yet, it was surprising to have 19 hikers come out and ignore the cold temperatures.
We had several new hikers join us today.A hike to Mellon Lake was chosen for today and it turned out to be a wise choice because we did not have to break trail, thanks to the snowmobile tracks.
We tentatively crossed the small creek, hoping that under the snow the wood pallets were still there - they were, so everyone made it across without getting wet!
As this was the first snowshoe hike for a number of people this year, and for some the first time ever on snowshoes, we quickly realized that the 6 plus km distance to Mellon Lake would not be possible. We snowshoed for an hour, reaching the berm, and we agreed that this was far enough - especially considering that the snowmobile tracks ended here and the hard work of breaking trail would have to begin. It was cold, especially with the blustery wind in more open areas, but most of the time the bush nicely sheltered us. A good hike - in the end about 4.4 km - just enough to break in our snowshoe legs!
